That of ironing boards is a history that has its roots as far back as the early Middle Ages, to the time of the ninth-century Vikings, who used glass and whalebone supports for smoothing linen. The system of flat supports and weights was used and refined in Europe over the following centuries until the advent of the first rudimentary models of irons.
In recent times, revolutionizing the world of ironing boards was the meeting in 1980 between a design enthusiast, the Swiss Jean Monney, and an Italian engineer, Carlo Bertami. The latter, inspired by professional ironing systems, proposed creating a single ironing system that integrated a boiler iron and an ironing board. Thus was born Laurastar, whose name is a tribute to Laura Biagiotti, with whom Monney had previously collaborated on watches and jewelry. After several years of model expansion and refinement, in 1996 the same company launched Laurastar Magic, the first home-use ironing system equipped with a board with suction and blowing. A worldwide success that resulted in one million models sold in about ten years.
What is a professional vacuum ironing board?
The professional suction ironing board is an essential support in many settings where high-quality ironing is an essential part of daily operations to maintain the presentation and functionality of textiles. Its effectiveness and versatility make it an indispensable tool especially for textile industries, professional laundries and tailors, and hotel facilities.
These ironing tables are equipped with distinctive features that distinguish them from ordinary ironing boards for domestic use. In particular, suction, heating and blowing are essential features to facilitate ironing and ensure flawless results.
Vacuum ironing boards: features and operation
Professional suction ironing boards have a structure quite similar to those commonly used for domestic ironing. The legs are made of steel and allow adjustment of the height of the board, which in most cases has a slightly wider surface area.
A small control panel indicates the temperature of the board, which is constantly heated so as to facilitate ironing even in the most complex places, making operations considerably precise. In fact, the presence of two hot surfaces (iron plate and table) halves ironing time, being able to act on the fabric only on one side without having to turn it. The delivery of hot air is managed through a foot pedal, which is connected to the ironing board via an electric cable.
Through the suction function, the ironing board creates a downward flow of air that can hold the garment firmly on its surface. In this way, the garment adheres perfectly to the board, preventing wrinkles from forming on the fabric as the iron passes through and allowing the steam delivered to penetrate better into the fibers.
Blowing, on the other hand, is a function that creates a small air cushion between the board and the fabrics, lifting more delicate garments (silk, velvet and the like) and facilitating the passage of the iron without the risk of damaging them. Models equipped with a blowing system are also popular because they remove excess moisture from treated garments, allowing them to dry much more quickly.
From a technical standpoint, the vacuum ironing board works thanks to an electric motor and a heating element. The electric motor handles the suction and blowing modes, which are usually activated as soon as the iron is lifted from its base. Heating of the board, on the other hand, is done through an electric heating element regulated through a thermostat, which sets the temperature between 30 and 90 degrees Celsius.
As far as power and consumption are concerned, excellent results are already obtained with an electric motor of about 150 W and a 400 W heating element, although some high-performance models for industrial use can reach up to 800 W.
